The Storied curriculum is funded in part by The Byron & Dorothy Gerson Fund.
The Storied Curriculum brings Jewish history, identity, values, and culture to life through an immersive mix of Storied videos, guided listening, articles, historical research, group discussion, musical analysis, and creative projects.
Each story is organized around one of three core categories:
Jewish Contributors & Collaborators
The producers, managers, executives, mentors, activists, and other influential figures whose ideas, relationships, and leadership helped shape music and culture.
Jewish Musicians & Artists
Performers and songwriters whose Jewish identities, experiences, creativity, and values shaped their work.
Jewish Content in Music
Jewish texts, biblical narratives, prayers, values, and cultural references found within popular songs.
The music is only the starting point. Each unit moves from listening and cultural context into deeper conversations about history, Jewish identity, moral leadership, artistic expression, and spiritual meaning.
Participants consider questions such as: How does discovering the Jewish story behind a song change the way we hear it? What Jewish values are expressed through the artist’s choices? How can music preserve ancient stories while giving them new meaning? What responsibilities do artists and cultural leaders have to their communities and the wider world?
Rather than approaching Jewish identity primarily through hardship, Storied offers a joyful and empowering perspective rooted in creativity, contribution, collaboration, cultural influence, and pride.
From Pilot to Program
The high school curriculum was piloted at Frankel Jewish Academy during the 2025–2026 school year. Following the pilot, the school committed to two additional program cycles.
An adult education version was also piloted through the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and The J Detroit’s JLearn program, which committed to offering the curriculum for two semesters starting October 26, 2026.
